Jonathan Swift was an Anglo-Irish satirist, essayist, and cleric who served as Dean of St. Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin. His savage wit found its greatest expression in Gulliver's Travels and 'A Modest Proposal,' works that set the standard for political satire in English. He remains the language's most ferocious ironist.
