Jorge Amado was the most widely read Brazilian novelist of the twentieth century. His works celebrate the culture, people, and landscapes of Bahia and include Gabriela, Clove and Cinnamon, Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands, and Captains of the Sands. His novels have been translated into nearly fifty languages.
