José Eduardo Agualusa won the International Dublin Literary Award for "A General Theory of Oblivion," a novel about a woman who walls herself into her Luanda apartment for thirty years as Angola descends into civil war. The Angolan author writes about Portuguese Africa's colonial legacy and post-independence trauma with imagination and compassion. Agualusa's work brings lusophone African literature to world attention.
