Joseph O'Neill's "Netherland" was longlisted for the 2008 Booker Prize, following a Dutch banker's displacement in post-9/11 New York through his involvement with a Trinidadian cricket visionary. The Irish-born author writes literary fiction that examines contemporary life with both ironic distance and emotional engagement. "The Dog" continued his exploration of expatriate experience in the Gulf.
