Josephine Tey was the pen name of Elizabeth Mackintosh, a Scottish playwright and mystery novelist who produced a small but extraordinary body of detective fiction. Her novels broke with Golden Age conventions through psychological depth, literary ambition, and willingness to question the genre's own assumptions. She published only eight novels before her death from cancer at 55.
