Juan Ramón Jiménez

Spanish · 1880–1958

Juan Ramón Jiménez won the 1956 Nobel Prize in Literature "for his lyrical poetry, which in Spanish language constitutes an example of high spirit and artistical purity." The Spanish poet's "Platero and I"—prose poems about a donkey—became one of the most beloved works in Spanish literature. Jiménez spent his later years in exile after the Spanish Civil War, writing poetry of increasing abstraction and spiritual intensity.
