Julie Otsuka

American · b. 1962

Julie Otsuka won the PEN/Faulkner Award for "The Buddha in the Attic," a novel told in first-person plural about Japanese picture brides coming to America. The American author's compression and collective voice create something between novel and prose poem. Otsuka writes about Japanese-American experience—immigration, internment, erasure—with formal innovation.
