Jun'ichirō Tanizaki is one of the major figures of modern Japanese literature, known for works that explore the tension between Western modernization and traditional Japanese aesthetics. His novels include The Makioka Sisters, Some Prefer Nettles, and Naomi, and his essay In Praise of Shadows is a classic of aesthetic criticism. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature several times.
