Justin Cartwright was shortlisted for the Booker Prize twice—for "In Every Face I Meet" and "Leading the Cheers"—and won the Whitbread Novel Award. The South African–born British author wrote about both countries with attention to race, history, and the stories people tell themselves. Cartwright died in 2018, leaving a body of work that examined post-apartheid South Africa and contemporary England.
