It was published in 2017 and became a widely read queer YA title. Ancrum also wrote Icarus, a romantic heist story drawn from Greek myth, and Weightless, a novel about a love affair between two young men. Ancrum began by self-publishing and by sharing work online, and then moved to major publishers. The books are short and sensory, with brief chapters, close attention to color and touch, and teenage characters who deal with mental illness, abusive families and first love. Ancrum is also known for work in digital media and design. Their novels have found a steady readership among teenagers and have been part of the growth of LGBTQ+ young adult fiction in the United States.
