Karl Adolph Gjellerup shared the 1917 Nobel Prize in Literature with fellow Dane Henrik Pontoppidan "for his varied and rich poetry, which is inspired by lofty ideals." The Danish author wrote novels and poetry that explored spiritual questions, eventually converting to Buddhism. "The Pilgrim Kamanita" embodied his interest in Eastern religion. Gjellerup represented Danish literature's cosmopolitan ambitions.
