Keri Hulme won the 1985 Booker Prize for "The Bone People," a novel about violence, love, and Māori identity in New Zealand. The New Zealand author—of mixed Māori and European heritage—created a book that divided critics and captivated readers. Hulme published little after her prize-winning debut, which remains her monument.
