Kobo Abe was a Japanese novelist, playwright, and photographer whose work combined Kafkaesque absurdism with precise physical observation. The Woman in the Dunes, his best-known novel internationally, was adapted into an acclaimed film in 1964 and established him as one of the major voices of postwar Japanese literature.
