Laila Lalami writes across borders. Born in Rabat, Morocco, she moved to the United States and began publishing fiction that interrogates identity, immigration, and the stories nations tell about themselves. "The Moor's Account" (2013) reimagines the first Black African explorer of America through a sixteenth-century Moroccan slave's voice. "The Other Americans" (2019) unfolds a death in a California desert town through nine perspectives, examining who counts as American and who gets to decide. Lalami's essays and criticism appear widely; her fiction has been shortlisted for the Pulitzer Prize. She writes about displacement without sentimentality, finding the political embedded in the personal.
