Laurie Frankel is an American novelist. She grew up in Wisconsin and earned a PhD in English from the University of Texas at Austin, then worked as a teacher before turning to fiction full time. Her novels include The Atlas of Love, Goodbye for Now, Family Tree, One Plus One, This Is How It Always Is, and Enormous Wings. This Is How It Always Is (2017), about a family raising a transgender child, became her best-known book and a New York Times bestseller. It was widely chosen by book clubs and brought her a large readership. Her books are domestic and character-driven, and they combine humor with serious questions about family, identity and care. She lives in Seattle, Washington, with her husband and daughter, and her own family experience with a transgender child shaped her view of the subject.
