Léon Frapié wrote about working-class Paris at the turn of the twentieth century. "The Kindergarten" (1904) won the Prix Goncourt for its portrait of children in a public school—their hungers, their cruelties, their resilience in the face of poverty. Frapié spent his career documenting the lives of those the French establishment preferred to ignore.
