Liz Pichon

British · b. 1963

Liz Pichon draws inside her books rather than around them. The Tom Gates series, which began in 2011 with The Brilliant World of Tom Gates, is set in Tom's own handwriting — doodles crowding the margins, letters swelling and shrinking, whole pages surrendered to a picture of a caramel wafer. Tom is a distractible schoolboy who forges excuse notes, torments his sister Delia and plots world domination for his band, Dogzombies. The first book took the Roald Dahl Funny Prize and the Waterstones Children's Book Prize, and the series has sold millions of copies in more than forty languages; A Tiny Bit Lucky is the seventh. Pichon was born in Islington in 1963 and studied graphic design at Camberwell College of Arts. She worked as an art director in the music industry, designing record sleeves, before children's books took over. She writes and draws in Brighton.
