Louise Welsh writes literary thrillers set in grimy corners of Britain and Europe. "The Cutting Room" (2002), her debut, follows a Glasgow auctioneer who discovers photographs suggesting a possible murder. Welsh's work combines noir atmosphere with serious literary intent. She has written about Berlin, Victorian Edinburgh, and the Glasgow underworld, always finding menace in what others overlook.
