Lucian of Samosata was a rhetorician and satirist who wrote in Greek during the Roman Empire. Born in Samosata, Syria, he was known for his wit, his hostility to superstition, and his comic dialogues. His works include Dialogues of the Dead, The Sale of Philosophers, and True History, which is considered the earliest surviving work of science fiction.
