Lucy Ellmann wrote "Ducks, Newburyport" (2019) as a single sentence running over a thousand pages—the interior monologue of an Ohio housewife making pies and worrying about America. The novel was shortlisted for the Booker Prize and won the Goldsmiths Prize for experimental fiction. Born in Illinois to psychoanalyst parents, raised in Britain, Ellmann brings an outsider's ear to American speech and anxiety. Her earlier novels are shorter but equally caustic.
