Ludmila Ulitskaya is one of the most prominent contemporary Russian novelists. Trained as a geneticist, she turned to writing in the 1980s and has produced a body of work distinguished by its psychological depth, its attention to family and community, and its engagement with Russian and Jewish identity. She has been a vocal critic of authoritarianism in Russia.
