Luo Guanzhong

Chinese · 1330–1400

Luo Guanzhong shaped the historical novel and martial arts fiction through Romance of the Three Kingdoms, the epic tale of the fall of the Han Dynasty and the struggle among three successor states. Drawing on historical records, earlier storytelling traditions, and dramatic adaptations, he created characters—the cunning strategist Zhuge Liang, the loyal warrior Guan Yu, the treacherous Cao Cao—who became cultural archetypes throughout East Asia. Little is known of his life; tradition suggests he lived during the chaotic Yuan-Ming transition and may have participated in the rebellions of that era. His novel remains the most widely read work of Chinese classical fiction.
