MacKinlay Kantor won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1956 for "Andersonville," an 800-page novel about the Confederate prison camp where nearly 13,000 Union soldiers died. The American author spent twenty-five years researching the book. Kantor also wrote "Glory for Me," the novel adapted into the film "The Best Years of Our Lives." His work treats American history—especially its wars—with documentary patience and moral weight.
