Maddie Mortimer burst onto the British literary scene with "Maps of Our Spectacular Bodies" (2022), a debut novel narrated partly by a cancer spreading through a woman's body. The disease has its own voice—lyrical, predatory, uncomfortably intimate. Mortimer was twenty-five when the novel appeared; it was longlisted for the Booker Prize. Her experimental form serves emotional material: a daughter watching her mother die.
