Maj Sjöwall was a Swedish author and journalist who, with her partner Per Wahlöö, created the Martin Beck series of police procedurals. Writing alternate chapters, the couple produced ten novels between 1965 and 1975 that transformed Scandinavian crime fiction. Their work combined Marxist social criticism with rigorous procedural realism, directly inspiring the Nordic noir tradition.
