Malcolm Bradbury shaped two generations of British writers as founder of the creative writing program at the University of East Anglia. His students included Ian McEwan and Kazuo Ishiguro. His own novels satirize academic life with precision: "The History Man" (1975) anatomized a manipulative sociology lecturer; "Rates of Exchange" (1983), shortlisted for the Booker Prize, follows a British academic through a fictional Eastern European country. Bradbury was also a television writer and critic. He died in 2000, having turned the campus novel into serious literature.
