Marc Elder won the Prix Goncourt in 1913 for "The People of the Sea," a novel about Breton fishermen. The French writer documented the hard lives of France's maritime communities at a moment when that world was beginning to disappear. Elder's reputation has faded since his death in 1933, but his prize-winning work remains a document of a vanished France.
