Margaret Ayer Barnes won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1931 for "Years of Grace," a novel tracing three generations of a Chicago family. Barnes came to fiction late, after working as a playwright with Edward Sheldon. Her novels examined upper-middle-class American women navigating social change. She was largely forgotten after her death but represents an important transitional figure in American women's writing.
