Margaret Wilson won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1924 for "The Able McLaughlins," a novel about a Scottish immigrant family on the Iowa frontier. Wilson was a Presbyterian minister's daughter who spent years as a missionary in India before turning to fiction. Her prize win surprised the literary establishment; her subsequent work never matched its success. She represents the regional realism that dominated American fiction before modernism.
