Mariama Bâ was a Senegalese novelist and feminist activist whose two novels, written shortly before her death, became foundational texts of African women's literature. She drew on her own experience of marriage, divorce, and education to write fiction that combined personal testimony with social critique. So Long a Letter won the first Noma Award for Publishing in Africa in 1980.
