Marina Lewycka published her first novel at fifty-eight. "A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian" (2005) became an unexpected bestseller—a comic novel about two sisters trying to save their elderly Ukrainian-immigrant father from a scheming young bride. Lewycka was born in a German refugee camp to Ukrainian parents; her fiction draws on immigrant experience with satirical precision. She died in 2025 after writing several more novels, all marked by comic energy and political awareness.
