Marshall R. Pihl was Professor of Korean Studies at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and a leading authority on Korean oral and vernacular literary traditions. His work on p'ansori and his translations of Korean literature contributed substantially to the study of pre-modern Korean culture in English. His studies of shaman narrative and oral performance remain important reference works in the field.
