Martin Booth wrote crime novels, thrillers, and literary fiction before his early death. "The Industry of Souls" (1998) won the Booker Prize—a British man in post-Soviet Russia remembers his life in the Gulag. Booth lived in Hong Kong and wrote extensively about the city and about the opium trade. His range was unusual: biographies of drug lords, novels about concentration camps, histories of cannabis.
