Martin Flavin won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1944 for "Journey in the Dark," a novel about an ambitious midwesterner's rise in the business world. Flavin was primarily a playwright before turning to fiction. His Pulitzer win surprised many; the novel has not remained in print. He represents the solid middle-class realism that dominated American fiction before more experimental voices emerged.
