Masao Miyoshi was a Japanese-American literary critic and professor at the University of California, Berkeley and San Diego. His work on Japanese and comparative literature was distinguished by its engagement with postcolonial theory and its resistance to both nationalist and Western-imperialist frameworks. Modern Japanese Writers is considered a founding text of Japanese literary studies in America.
