Matthew Kneale won the Whitbread Book of the Year in 2000 for "English Passengers," a novel about a Victorian expedition to Tasmania in search of the Garden of Eden. Multiple narrators—a clergyman, a convict, an Aboriginal man—tell the story, and colonial violence accumulates through their contrasting accounts. The British author lived in Rome and draws on historical research for his fiction.
