Matthew Gregory Lewis was a British novelist, playwright, and Member of Parliament who wrote The Monk at the age of nineteen. The novel's scandalous content made him infamous and earned him the nickname 'Monk Lewis.' He also wrote successful Gothic dramas and influenced the development of horror fiction.
