Meenakshi Mukherjee was a literary critic and scholar at Jawaharlal Nehru University and later Hyderabad Central University. She was among the founding figures of Indian literary criticism in English and produced influential studies of the Indian novel, realism, and the politics of translation. Her work opened the academic study of Indian English fiction as a distinct field.
