Michael Hofmann translates German literature with a poet's ear. He has brought Joseph Roth, Franz Kafka, and Gottfried Benn to English readers. Hofmann is also a poet and critic; his essays on translation and literature appear in the London Review of Books. His father was a novelist; Michael became the bridge between German and English letters.
