Michael Shaara won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1975 for "The Killer Angels," a novel about the Battle of Gettysburg told from the perspectives of generals on both sides. The book was largely ignored on publication and became a classic after Shaara's death—the basis for the film "Gettysburg." Shaara's son Jeff continued the Civil War saga. Michael wrote with a veteran's respect for soldiers and a novelist's ability to inhabit opposing minds.
