Michelle de Kretser was born in Sri Lanka, raised in Australia, and writes novels about migration, loss, and place. "The Lost Dog" (2008) follows a literary scholar searching for his missing dog through the Australian bush while his mother fades in a nursing home. De Kretser won the Miles Franklin Award twice. Her prose is precise; her structures are complex; her attention to landscape is exact.
