Mick Jackson's "The Underground Man" (1997) was shortlisted for the Booker Prize and won the Royal Society of Literature's Ondaatje Prize. The novel imagines the final years of the Duke of Portland, a Victorian aristocrat who retreated into an elaborate underground tunnel system. Jackson writes about eccentricity and isolation with sympathy and dark humor.
