Mieko Kawakami

Japanese · b. 1976

Mieko Kawakami writes about women's bodies and choices with unflinching honesty. "Breasts and Eggs" (2008, expanded 2019) follows three women navigating fertility, desire, and autonomy in contemporary Japan. "Heaven" (2022) tracks two bullied middle-schoolers through cruelty and philosophy. Kawakami began as a singer and blogger in Osaka; her fiction brings that directness to literary form.
