Miguel Ángel Asturias won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1967 for bringing Latin American indigenous culture into modern literature. The Guatemalan author's "The President" (1946) anatomizes dictatorship; "Men of Maize" (1949) blends Mayan mythology with peasant resistance to land exploitation. His Banana Trilogy attacked the United Fruit Company. Asturias served as a diplomat; his work fused magical realism with political engagement before García Márquez made the combination famous.
