Mikhail Saltykov-Shchedrin was Russia's greatest satirist, a novelist and journalist who served as a provincial governor while producing savage critiques of Russian bureaucracy, serfdom, and social corruption. His works include The Golovlyov Family, The History of a Town, and numerous satirical sketches. He edited the journal Otechestvennye Zapiski after Nekrasov's death.
