Mildred D. Taylor based her Logan family saga on stories her father told about growing up Black in Mississippi. Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry won the Newbery Medal and launched a series of novels spanning three generations of Logans. She is one of the most important chroniclers of the Black American experience in children's literature.
