Monique Roffey won the Costa Book of the Year in 2020 for "The Mermaid of Black Conch," a novel about a mermaid caught by fishermen off a Caribbean island. The British-Trinidadian author brings magic realism to postcolonial settings. "The White Woman on the Green Bicycle" (2010) was shortlisted for the Orange Prize.
