Charles-Louis de Secondat, Baron de La Brède et de Montesquieu, was a French political philosopher and man of letters. He is best known for The Spirit of the Laws, a foundational text of political science, and for Persian Letters, one of the wittiest and most influential novels of the Enlightenment.
