Muriel Spark wrote novels like precision instruments. "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie" (1961) follows a charismatic Edinburgh teacher and the students she molds; it contains an entire moral education in 120 pages. Spark converted to Catholicism and brought a convert's certainty to her fiction—evil is real, choices matter, narrative can judge. Her novels are short, sharp, and often cruel in instructive ways. She died in 2006, having produced over twenty novels that never repeat themselves.
