Nadifa Mohamed was born in Somalia, raised in London, and writes about the Somali diaspora and British colonial history. "The Fortune Men" (2021), shortlisted for the Booker Prize, recreates the wrongful execution of Mahmood Mattan in 1952 Cardiff—a Somali sailor hanged on perjured testimony. Mohamed's fiction recovers forgotten Black British lives.
